Research Associate (Full-time)

Location: Washington DC / Hybrid
Salary range: $50,000 - $60,000

About the Position
ResearchEd seeks a Research Associate to conduct research on higher education, and social change, as well as to support institutional capacity-building initiatives. The Research Associate will contribute to the development of tools and methods designed to strengthen institutional research offices on college campuses. The Research Associate will also conduct primary and secondary research, assist with data analysis, and support the creation of case studies and communities of practice. The role also involves identifying relevant literature, drafting research summaries and reports, and collaborating with partner organizations in the field. This position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of policy, research, and practice in a mission-driven environment. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with a passion for evidence-based policy, keen attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize complex information for diverse audiences.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with college leadership and institutional research staff on data submission

  • Support the development of data tools to support institutional data capacity 

  • Analyze campus based data sources and collaborate with colleges to develop insights

  • Create data tools and conduct research to support student success initiatives 

  • Conduct literature reviews 

  • Synthesize findings of research and write reports 

  • Conduct quantitative data analysis on publicly available data 

  • Support qualitative research including focus groups, interviews, surveys 

  •  Develop and meet timelines for completion of multiple projects 

  •  Maintain regular communication with project leads to raise substantive questions, receive direction and feedback, and discuss next steps 

  • Other duties as assigned

    • Able to effectively analyze and use evidence, including data, to derive insights

  • Project Management: 

    • Able to manage multiple processes and projects at once 

    • Familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word, and other related office tools 

 

Knowledge, Education, and Experience: 

  • Experience in research and writing 

  • Experience in conducting data analysis

  • Experience working directly with postsecondary institutions and providing technical support preferred

  • Familiarity with the field of institutional research preferred 

  • Knowledge of federal data sets including IPEDS preferred 

  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools such as R, STATA, SAS, and/or Tableau preferred 

  • Minimum of two years experience working in education policy research 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred, or equivalent experience. We value the skills and competencies that come with various types of experience and will consider candidates who demonstrate relevant expertise, even if they do not hold a degree in the field

Data Activity:

Using a publicly available education data set, and a tool of your choice, create a chart or data visualization that tells a compelling story. Accompany the visual with a short written narrative, 250 words or less. Use the narrative to discuss why the visual matters, what the broader implications might be, and anything that might be missing from the data or worthy of further investigation.

Hiring Timeline:
